Who We Are
JOIN BANDS, NOT GANGS is a registered NPC (2018/341617/08) founded with the express goal of getting the youth of at-risk communities in Cape Town involved in music, rather than drugs and gangsterism. Our goal is to equip them with instruments and access to music programs or teachers. To join a band, instead of a gang.
These are EARLY DAYS. In fact, we’ve just launched!
So you are starting our journey with us as we figure out how to serve our communities best as we go along. It’s a work in progress!
What we do know for sure, though, is the following:
Our main goal is MUSIC INSTRUMENTS: We hope to serve as a supply chain for musical instruments. We would like to find and collect the instruments from donors and then find the right places and people to give them to. Finding those “right” places, will come through building relationship with the local communities and finding out what resources they have (venues and people) and what they need.
COMMUNITY involvement: We will work closely with the communities we serve, so that the effort is from the ground up, always.
We are starting LOCAL: In fact, we hope to start with our very own community of Scottsdene in Kraaifontein. Gang violence has consumed this small neighborhood, but there is hope.
We are making a DOCUMENTARY: Karoo Films has partnered with JOIN BANDS, NOT GANGS on a 2-year journey to film our humble beginnings and to capture our story as we grow. This will enable us to keep sharing our journey as we go along, and to provide accountability as to where our instruments are going and the impact it is making in our neighbourhoods. We are also excited about all the interesting people and places we will find along the way!
One such person, Mario Rousseau, is a former gang-leader who spent 13 years in jail, but had a radical encounter with God’s love that changed his life forever. He is now working with reformed gangsters and prisoners, as well as at-risk youth, getting them involved in music. He even started up and ran a prison band that went big.
Continual FEEDBACK: We will try to update regularly on social media so that you can follow our journey and spot your first bright blue bass guitar now being played by a prison band member or a 12 year old “Abraham Laborial” that got empowered to walk in his or her destiny due to YOUR donation!
CHANGED LIVES: This is our goal. And we can’t wait to see this come to fruition!
We love, because He first loved us!
Our approach to bringing renewal to communities is a holistic one. Our goal is to provide the instruments and the logistical support, but we also hope to support the communities in faith and hope and love.
As the love of Jesus has changed those of us who have started JOIN BANDS, NOT GANGS, we hope to share that love with the people around us. The Bible says, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers”. 3 John 2. This being the heart of God towards these communities, we will share His love wherever He may lead us, to help them ‘prosper and be in good health’. God hasn’t forgotten about Scottsdene and the Cape Flats and the Western Cape and South Africa. But who will do His work, if His body – the living church that walks in Spirit and in Truth – does not do that work for Him? WHO, I ask you? I believe it’s God’s will and His heart to see people set free from addiction and brokenness and to be given the opportunity to life out their God-given destinies. And for many, I believe, that destiny includes making music.
Giving young people instruments would be the equivalent of mining for gold. We are going to strike it rich in terms of talent and potential.
It’s all about giving hope.
Join us, as we help to raise up a new generation of musicians in Cape Town and beyond
