Join Bands, Not Gangs is a registered non-profit in Cape Town, South Africa, using music to combat gangsterism in at-risk neighborhoods.

Since 2018, we've brought grassroots music lessons to areas heavily affected by gangs. Our approach focuses on three key areas: Gang Prevention, Gang Intervention, and Professional Music Opportunities.

Gang Prevention: We engage children in music programs to keep them busy and away from gang influence. The lessons have been widely popular.

Gang Intervention: We connect with local gangs, offering music lessons, rehab options, and self-improvement courses to help young men break free from gang life. Many have successfully turned their lives around.

Professional Opportunities: We provide disadvantaged youth with real-world music experiences like songwriting competitions, concerts, and music videos, inspiring them to choose music over gangs. Our Mentors' Band has spread this message through public performances.

After 7 years, we stand at a crossroads. Our founder, Karien de Waal, has led us from concept to a functioning non-profit, but it’s time to explore new leadership or structures. What remains clear is that prevention is key—keeping children out of gangs through the power of music.
